Granite Worktop Facts

Granite is the choice item for many home owners because it looks good and is extremely resistant and durable. Granite is originally created from volcanoes, making it an extremely hard rock and perfect for worktops. It is also used extensively for flooring buildings and creating monuments. In some areas, it was so abundant that it was used to build foundations for homes.

Installing a granite worktop can be quite difficult because the stone very hard to cut. Usually, a skilled craftsman will first take exact measurements and then use specialized tools to cut the granite. Many companies however are not equipped to deal with the troublesome process of working with granite so be sure to find one that does.

There are two ways that you could obtain a granite worktop. The first method is to purchase a worktop that has already been completely constructed. Although this is the simplest way, you will still need a vehicle than can handle the weight of the granite. The second method is to have craftsmen cut and assemble the worktop at your home, this will allow you to create a custom design but it is much more expensive.

Granite worktops can come in large variety of different colors and finishes. There are two main types of granite, “variegated” and “consistent”. Consistent granite has the same pattern running through the entire stone. Variegated granite has an assortment of spinning colored veins, giving the stone an aesthetic and unique look.

There are also various grades of granite. The highest grade is known as Premium grade, although it is fairly expensive it is the best choice because there are no stone defects on the surface because it is naturally sealed and highly polished. First Choice is another type just below premium grade and it is also highly polished and does not contain visible defects. Commercial Grade granite is usually very poor quality and usually has visible defects. It is low in cost however so it is popularly used for large projects in order to save on cost.

Kitchen granite worktops are popular in many households because they are easy to maintain. Some common kitchen ingredients can erode granite though so you will need to be careful of them. The acid from limes for instance will degrade the granite’s polish so any lime spills should be cleaned off quickly. Kitchen worktops can also be easily stained by certain foods so a black granite worktop is preferable to help hide stains.

Although granite is an extremely hard stone is still prone to scratches, especially if the polish is wearing out. All granite surfaces should be sealed every year unless you are using a sealant that specifies two or three years. You should also make sure to clean your granite worktop often and make sure that substances do not stay on it for too long. Granite tops can also be polished easily using normal kitchen polish and a clean cloth. If your worktop has been stained it can be very difficult to get the stain removed without removing the entire stone.
