Quartz vs Granite Countertops

Both quartz countertops and granite countertops are very beautiful and they both have many nice features. Part of the decision about whether to go with granite or quartz countertops will be determined by your tastes but part of the decision can be decide by the characteristics of the different counter tops.

When you remodel a kitchen one of the most important aspects is going to be the countertops because this is the most visible part of the room. Also, most of the work is done on the countertops so their durability and wear ability are very important. You definitely don’t want to spend thousands of dollars redoing your kitchen and then have the countertops look cheesy in a year or two.

Probably the biggest difference when comparing quartz vs granite countertops is the fact that granite is a natural stone slab and quartz tops are actually a combination of stone (quartz) pieces and manmade materials which are used to hold the quartz together. Some people like the fact that the granite is a single slab while others like the quartz because it is actually tougher and more durable.

Granit can break off fairly easily. If you drop and object on the overhung section the slab can crack or fissure. This means you really should support the overhangs. Granite is not very forgiving of the wrong types of cleaners. Those containing ammonia can ruin the finish and make it look dull. You really need to periodically reseal granite tops in order for them to maintain their appearance. If you do have a problem and need to replace part of the granite you will find it is very hard to patch because, really, every piece of granite is different so trying to match it is mostly impossible. It is very difficult to cover up the seams with granite so they usually show.

Quartz countertops are usually more durable than granite countertops and they are usually maintenance free since they contain man made materials. Usually a quartz top is going to be cheaper than granite. If the piece is installed by a professional installer the seem is usually less visible and mostly invisible. If a piece of the quartz top needs to be replaced then matching it is much easier since it is manufactured under rigid rules.

Engineered quartz is harder than granite and twice as strong. You don’t need to reseal it and it withstands heat better. Does this mean in the battle between quartz countertops vs granite countertops the quartz will win? Not my a long shot. When it really come down to it people will choose what they like and granite worktops are a great addition to any kitchen.
